Georgia High School Football Player Dies After Collapsing at Practice

Georgia high school offensive lineman Rod Williams died Monday, two weeks after collapsing during team practice. 

Per Wayne Staats of the Augusta Chronicle, Burke County High School head coach Eric Parker confirmed the offensive lineman collapsed Sept. 22 and was transported to Georgia Regents Medical Center.

"We were initially told he had some drastic sudden event with his heart," Parker said. "We were hoping and praying he would come back; it just wasn't meant to be."

Additional details about Williams' death were not available in Staats' report, but following the team's practice Monday, Parker noted the young man took a "turn for the worst." 

Parker also told Staats he wasn't entirely sure how the team was going to respond upon learning about Williams. 

"Stuff like this puts things in perspective," said Parker. "We're going to try to keep things as normal as possible. I think as time moves on, we'll be fine. What I'm not certain about is right this moment."

Even though the circumstances are different, the New York Post and the Associated Press published a story Monday, following the death of a Washington state player, noting there have (now) been five deaths involving high school football players this season.

2013 South Fulton High School Football is off the chain!!!

Langston Hughes High School and Creekside High School have represented South Fulton County, Georgia (Metro Atlanta, GA) in a major way during this 2013 Football Season!!!

“McEachern erased a 12-point fourth-quarter deficit and advanced to the Class AAAAAA quarterfinals with a 22-21 road win over Langston Hughes at Panther Stadium in Fairburn Friday night.  

For the second straight year Hughes (10-2) was eliminated by the third seed from Region 6-AAAAAA, and McEachern (10-2) reached the quarterfinal round for the first time in 14 years. The Indians will play Collins Hill next week.” --- *From Prep Zone Sports: Glennis Curry

Congratulations on another successful season!!! Langston Hughes will continue to take their program to the next level!!! To the administration, coaches, teachers, players and support staff, job well done!

Undefeated Creekside beat North Paulding High School 41 – 14 last week in the 3^rd round of the playoffs, and they are poised to take on undefeated Kell High School this upcoming Friday for a spot in the State Championship Game at the Georgia Dome!!!

Now you may believe that Creekside is all about the Berry Twins (brothers of All-Pro Free Safety Eric Berry of the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs), but you would be mistaken. Creekside is stacked with talent on both sides of the ball and when they hit the field, it’s all business for  this coaching staff and players!

No doubt the team is being Spiritually motivated by the death of 11^th grade standout De’Antre Turman, affectionately known as “Tre Tre,” who died from breaking his neck while making a tackle in a pre-season scrimmage game.

Good luck to Creekside as they carry the South Fulton football flag all the way to a victory this Friday night – December 6, 2013!!!
