Why are some of these young athletes dying?

Georgia High School Football Player Dies After Collapsing at Practice

Peter Morgan/Associated Press
Georgia high school offensive lineman Rod Williams died Monday, two weeks after collapsing during team practice.

Per Wayne Staats of the Augusta Chronicle, Burke County High School head coach Eric Parker confirmed the offensive lineman collapsed Sept. 22 and was transported to Georgia Regents Medical Center.
"We were initially told he had some drastic sudden event with his heart," Parker said. "We were hoping and praying he would come back; it just wasn't meant to be."
Additional details about Williams' death were not available in Staats' report, but following the team's practice Monday, Parker noted the young man took a "turn for the worst."
Parker also told Staats he wasn't entirely sure how the team was going to respond upon learning about Williams.
"Stuff like this puts things in perspective," said Parker. "We're going to try to keep things as normal as possible. I think as time moves on, we'll be fine. What I'm not certain about is right this moment."
Even though the circumstances are different, the New York Post and the Associated Press published a story Monday, following the death of a Washington state player, noting there have (now) been five deaths involving high school football players this season.

Are You Black Enough? What does Charles Barkley think?

*Thoughts by Coach Brown

In 2014, it is amazing that we have gotten to a point as African-American/Black people where we have a large segment of our population that actually believes that being smart, setting goals, working hard to achieve those goals and being successful is not what black people do.

This type of mind-set breeds self-hate which makes one person truly not like another person because that successful person chose to improve themselves and work towards a better life!

When someone chooses to not value learning, education, hard work, personal development and being smart; that decision usually leads to terrible results like homelessness, not eating everyday, wearing worn out clothes, etc.

Our young people must learn & truly understand that a basic education and graduation from high school is essential to their long-term earning potential success. They must also understand that learning a skill and trade that someone is willing to pay you for over and over again is very important!

My father and mother are being honored this upcoming weekend for their roles in the Civil Rights Student Movement of the 1960's when they attended Clark College (now Clark-Atlanta University). My brother and I would not be who we are today if it wasn't for our parents instilling certain values within us and having certain expectations of us. I am very grateful to my parents for loving me enough to teach me, discipline me and love me some more!!!

Parents, let's teach our children how to love themselves and want to be something positive in life, so that they will want to see other people be positive and successful in life!!!

LET'S BREAK THE CYCLE!!! READ WHAT CHARLES BARKLEY HAS TO SAY BELOW. ONE LOVE!!!

(CNN) -- Charles Barkley hasn't met a sensitive topic he couldn't dig into, and now he's speaking on what he calls a "dirty, dark secret" in the African-American community.
During an interview with a Philadelphia radio station, Barkley expounded on claims that Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson wasn't liked by some of his teammates in part because he wasn't considered to be "black enough."
Barkley said he wasn't at all surprised.
"There are a lot of black people who are unintelligent, who don't have success," Barkley said. "It's best to knock a successful black person down 'cause they're intelligent, they speak well, they do well in school, and they're successful. It's crabs in a barrel. ... We're the only ethnic group that says, 'hey, if you go to jail, it gives you street cred.' "
The concept of "crabs in a barrel" isn't new, and it's universal. If you've ever seen a bucket of crabs at the market, the ones at the bottom will try to pull down the crabs that are closer to the top.
"I lived this, and if it weren't for my parents I wouldn't have pushed through it," one Twitter user said in response to Barkley's comments.
Education advocate and CNN contributor Dr. Steve Perry is another observer who agrees with Barkley.
"Unfortunately, as I tell my white friends, we as black people, we're never going to be successful not because of you white people but because of other black people," Barkley said. "When you're black, you have to deal with so much crap in your life from other black people. It's a dirty, dark secret; I'm glad it's coming out."Others have been irked by Barkley's delivery. When Perry tweeted that he applauded Barkley's remarks, some responded that they bristled at Barkley's tendency to generalize the experience of an entire group.
The controversy began with an item from Bleacher Report's Mike Freeman, who said some of Wilson's Seahawks teammates don't care for him because "they think he's too close to the front office," he "doesn't always take the blame with teammates for mistakes he makes," and "some of the black players think Wilson isn't black enough."
"There is ... an element of race that needs to be discussed," Freeman said of Wilson's relationship with his teammates. "My feeling on this -- and it's backed up by several interviews with Seahawks players -- is that some of the black players think Wilson isn't black enough. This is an issue that extends outside of football, into African-American society, though it's gotten better recently. Well-spoken blacks are seen by some other blacks as not completely black. Some of this is at play." (Bleacher Report shares a parent company with CNN.)
The report has been denied by Seahawks player Richard Sherman, who said the accusations were "made up," and Wilson too has shaken off Freeman's point of view.
"Black enough? I don't even know what that means," Wilson said. "I'm just an educated, well-spoken male."
But to Barkley, Freeman's assertions are a very real part of being successful and black.
"For some reason we're brainwashed to think if you're not a thug or an idiot, you're not black enough. If you go to school, make good grades, speak intelligent and don't break the law, you're not a good black person," he said. "It's a dirty dark secret. I hate to bring white people into our crap, but as a black person, we all go through it when you're successful."

2013 South Fulton High School Football is off the chain!!!

By: Coach Brown

Langston Hughes High School and Creekside High School have represented South Fulton County, Georgia (Metro Atlanta, GA) in a major way during this 2013 Football Season!!!

“McEachern erased a 12-point fourth-quarter deficit and advanced to the Class AAAAAA quarterfinals with a 22-21 road win over Langston Hughes at Panther Stadium in Fairburn Friday night.
For the second straight year Hughes (10-2) was eliminated by the third seed from Region 6-AAAAAA, and McEachern (10-2) reached the quarterfinal round for the first time in 14 years. The Indians will play Collins Hill next week.” --- *From Prep Zone Sports: Glennis Curry
Congratulations on another successful season!!! Langston Hughes will continue to take their program to the next level!!! To the administration, coaches, teachers, players and support staff, job well done!

Undefeated Creekside beat North Paulding High School 41 – 14 last week in the 3rd round of the playoffs, and they are poised to take on undefeated Kell High School this upcoming Friday for a spot in the State Championship Game at the Georgia Dome!!!

Now you may believe that Creekside is all about the Berry Twins (brothers of All-Pro Free Safety Eric Berry of the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs), but you would be mistaken. Creekside is stacked with talent on both sides of the ball and when they hit the field, it’s all business for  this coaching staff and players!

No doubt the team is being Spiritually motivated by the death of 11th grade standout De’Antre Turman, affectionately known as “Tre Tre,” who died from breaking his neck while making a tackle in a pre-season scrimmage game.

Good luck to Creekside as they carry the South Fulton football flag all the way to a victory this Friday night – December 6, 2013!!!

A High School kicker hits a 64-yarder!!!

Thoughts by Coach Brown

I do not know about you, but when I was in high school playing football, I don't believe I could have kicked a 64-yard field goal. I was an above average (All-County/All-Region) Cornerback/Safety in a great program, but there was no way in the world for me to fanthom the kickers on my team or any other team that we played against kicking a 64-yard field goal!!!

When you read the article below, you will see that Austin Pacheco did just that; he kicked a 64-yard field go with little bit to spare!

The great thing about the story is that Austin received props from the other team! Great sportsmanship, great kicking ability and what a gutsy call by Austin's coach!

Congratulations to Austin and his team, and I hope Austin continues to kick the ball well because it looks like he has a bright future!

Enjoy the article! One Love!

Statistically speaking: Kicker hits incredible 64-yard field goal

On Friday night, Carson (Nev.) High placekicker Austin Pacheco did something at the high school level that no one has ever done in a competitive NFL game: He hit a field goal from 64 yards out.
Carson football kicker Austin Pacheco
As reported by the Associated Press and Carson City Nevada Appeal, Pacheco drilled a 64-yard field-goal attempt with 27 seconds remaining to lift Carson to a 27-24 victory against Bishop Manogue (Nev.) High School.

"I'm still in shock," Pacheco told the Nevada Appeal. "I knew it was good as soon as I hit it. The snap was perfect and the hold was perfect. The wind was blowing to the right and I played it perfectly.
"I wasn't surprised that coach let me try. He told me before the game that anything 65 and under we had a chance. We did what we could do."

Pacheco's kick stands as the second longest in Nevada state history, behind a 1985 68-yard effort from Reno (Nev.) High kicker Dirk Borgognone which stands as both the Nevada and national high school record. Pacheco's kick was also long enough to tie for the fourth-longest field goal in high school football history.

Perhaps most strikingly, Pacheco's kick actually came from farther out than any NFL kicker has hit from in a professional game. Raiders place-kicker Sebastian Janikowski connected on a 63-yarder in his team's season-opening victory against the Broncos to tie for the longest in league history, but that kick was still a full yard shorter than the one Pacheco hit on Friday.

While everyone on the Bishop Manogue sideline was stunned to see Pacheco line up to attempt the game-winning field goal, his own coach said he never doubted his decision to attempt the field goal then and there, rather than go for a first down with his team facing a fourth-and-13 situation.

As you can see above, the kick would have been good from even farther back. 70 yards? It sure looked like it had a chance.

"I don't know what to say," Carson coach Blair Roman told the Nevada Appeal. "You might have to wait a minute.

"That [field goal] broke the NFL record. I know it was off a tee and I know it was wind-aided, but it was a great kick. It was fourth-and-13, and we're not a fourth-and-13 team. I knew he had the leg to make it."

After the game ended, even Bishop Manogue coach Paul Mills was still struggling to come to grips with the fact that his squad had just lost out to a 64-yard field goal. In fact, he was still stunned that Carson even had the gumption to attempt one.
"We knew it was going to come down to the wire," said Mills. "One of the kids on the sideline said the tee's out there and I was thinking the tee from the previous kick. Then I'm looking out there and they're lining up for a field goal.
"The kid nailed it. My hat's off to him. That's a great job in a very pressure-filled situation. Wind-aided or not, he got the job done and there's a lot of variables when you're kicking that far."
